Dan Wions - Principal Horn - New York City Ballet

Music has been an integral part of Dan's life since early childhood. He began studies on piano at the age of two, composition at age five, and finally the horn at age nine. His performance experience is extensive, ranging from orchestral, concert band, chamber music, and solo repertoire, to pop, rock, show tunes, and jazz.

As a Hornist, Dan has worked under the baton of such prestigious conductors as James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Michael Tilson Thomas, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Manfred Honeck, Sir Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Michael Stern, Stefan Sanderling, and Eri Klas, among others. He has recorded on the Sony Classical and Naxos labels, for NASCAR and ESPN productions, and has performed on tour dates with Dave Brubeck, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Sarah McLachlan, John Legend, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Carlos Santana, Kenny G, Frank Sinatra Jr., Patti Lupone, Anne Murray, Leann Rhimes, Mannheim Steamroller, Clay Aiken, Jack Jones, The Irish Tenors, Ronan Tynan, and Josh Groban, among others. As a soloist, Dan has toured extensively as a founding member of Universal Brass Ensemble and has performed solos with regional and college ensembles throughout the United States.

Currently, Dan works as Principal Horn of the New York City Ballet, a substitute musician with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, and several Broadway shows, while maintaining positions as Principal Horn of the Glimmerglass Opera Festival, the Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia, The Ocean City Pops Orchestra in New Jersey, and the Distinguished Concerts International Orchestra in NYC. Dan has been a finalist and semi-finalist in auditions with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony, Kennedy Center Opera, New Jersey Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Delaware Symphony, Pittsburgh Opera, and Hartford Symphony. Teachers include Joe Anderer, Michelle Baker, Myron Bloom, Scott Brubaker, Tony Cecere, Peter Gordon, Michael Hatfield, Phil Myers, Erik Ralske, Rick Seraphinoff, and Chris Wilhjelm.

Dan holds a BM in Horn Performance, with outside studies in piano and composition, from Indiana University. He is a former faculty member of the Westminster Conservatory of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, and the Summertrios chamber music festival. As a student, Dan attended a number of summer music festivals, including the FAME festival, the National Orchestral Institute, and three consecutive years as a member of the prestigious Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland.

Dan's home is split between Philadelphia and New York City, performing, teaching, and coaching primarily in the NJ, NY, PA tri-state area, and touring and presenting masterclasses worldwide.
